(May 19, 2005.) Family Health Council’s Nutrition Services Program is offering a program in diabetes self-management. Anyone with a diagnosis of diabetes and a physician’s referral to a dietitian can participate. Enrollment is open to men and women of all ages, and most insurance plans are accepted. This program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
Participants will have one-on-one medical nutrition therapy meetings with a Registered Dietitian, in addition to four classes held over several weeks. Topics covered include the disease process of diabetes, medications, monitoring blood sugar and how to use the results, avoiding or delaying complications, problem-solving and adjusting to the diagnosis of diabetes.
Benefits can include the reduction of medication; for those not on medication, the need for medication may be delayed. Participants will learn how to approach the challenges of every-day life, such as preparing food, managing heart disease risk and participating more fully in activities.
Classes will be offered at Family Health Council offices located in Kittanning, Lower Burrell, McKees Rocks and Natrona Heights (Harrison Twp).
For more information or to register, call Family Health Council at 1-800-215-7494, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Ask for the Diabetes Program.
