Preventing Diabetes:
Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
home > education >managing diabetes > preventing diabetes

There are now 17 million Americans with diabetes and each year there are about one million new cases. The good news is that Type 2 Diabetes can be delayed or prevented in persons at risk for the disease. How can diabetes be prevented? Diabetes can be prevented through moderate changes in lifestyle. Take these small steps to prevent diabetes:

  • Lose a small amount of weight. Being overweight puts you at higher risk for type 2 diabetes. Losing as little as 10 pounds can help reduce your risk. You can do it by being more active and heating healthy.
  • Be more active. Chose an activity you enjoy. Take a walk, swim, bike ride, dance, or play ball with your children. Be physically active 30 minutes a day 5 days a week.
  • Eat healthy. Make healthy food choices and eat smaller servings. Cut down on fatty and fried foods. Choose more fruits and vegetables, dried beans, and whole grains.
  • Keep at it. Make one new change each week. If you get off track, start again and keep going.
